Toyota Speedway at Irwindale – 5/7/10

17 year old Dusty Davis of Las Vegas won the NASCAR Pepsi Super Late Model feature at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night. This was his second of the season and makes Davis two for two in the last two features.  If you include the win for Justin Johnson that makes three features in the last two weeks since Rip Michels joined the Vegas based Vision team.

Davis once again kept the car clean and waited for his opportunity until he inherited the lead when Jason Patison slid into the turn one wall on the last lap of the race. Justin Johnson, who was running in second at the time, was penalized for pushing Patison into the wall. He was sent to the back of the field and the race ended under a green-white-checker flag finish.  When asked about the incident, Davis said “It looked like they ran out of room.”

The 17-year-old Davis, the youngest to win a Super Late Model race at Irwindale, held off rookie Ryan Reed and Randel King. Davis said his strategy was to be conservative and it paid off.  He was in third place for most of the race and was able to take the lead when the top two drivers tangled on the last lap.

“This one was a lot harder to get,” Davis said.  ”We had a green-white-checker and it was all up to me.”  Dusty dedicated the win to his Mom and Grandmother for Mothers Day who follow him to the track every week and might have played a part in bringing Davis some luck on Mothers Day.

After the accident, Vision driver Justin Johnson, sliced through the field and went from 11th to sixth in the final two laps of the race and maintained his lead in the Super Late Model standings.  Reed ended up second, followed by King in third.  Johnson, Davis’ teammate at Vision Aviation Racing, has an eight-point lead over Reed in the Super Late Model standings at the track. Davis is now tied for third, just 10 points out of first in the standings.
