IRWINDALE RACING: Teenagers steal the show

By Keith Lair, Staff Writer

IRWINDALE – There’s something about young guns battling for the lead with the white flag waving.

The future of Super Late Model racing at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale was on display in front of approximately 1,800 on Saturday night, with teenagers Dusty Davis, Ryan Reed and Randel King side-by-side-by-side for the final lap after a green-white-checkered restart on the 48th lap of the Pepsi One series.

Davis, who won in the Twin 40 nightcap two weeks ago, started on the outside in the side-by-side restart. Reed, in the second row, dove inside of King on the start to make it three-wide, but Davis kept his outside line intact for his second consecutive victory.

“My spotter said three-wide and we stuck it on the outside and stuck it for the win,” Las Vegas resident Davis said. “I closed my eyes for a second, it was so close. I was going to be in the grass or win it.”

Reed, from Bakersfield, took second from King, 18, of Fullerton, by 0.007 seconds.

“We dug hard at the finish,” 16-year-old Reed said. “That was good, hard racing. I had so much fun.”

There were only 10 cars running on Lap 49, when racing turned crazy. NASCAR K&N East series driver Jason Patison of Corona led from the fourth lap, but had Las Vegas’ Justin Johnson right on his tail for the final five laps. Johnson dove inside of Patison off Turn 4 with the white flag waving when Patison wiggled a bit. Johnson and Patison then banged in Turn 1, sending Patison into the wall.

“He drove over his head and took us out,” Patison said.

Johnson was sent to the back of the field and it led to the green-white-checkered finish.

“I think they ran out of real estate,” Davis said.

Retired Arcadia fire captain Neil Conrad ended Jeff Williams’ three-race winning streak, taking the Southwest Tour Trucks series 35-lap main event. It was the Arcadia resident’s first victory at Irwindale since 2003. He took the lead on the sixth lap. Williams, from Newbury Park, finished second and Brady Helm of Huntington Beach was third.

“It wasn’t our night,” Williams said. “We’ve been awesome all year. The truck didn’t go, and when it did, it was too late.”

El Monte’s Kenny Smith won his second consecutive Langer Juice S2 series race. Bobby Kelley of Riverside was second and Dylan Lupton of Wilton was third. Smith led all 25 laps.

Sunland’s Daryl Scoggins, who started 10th, scored his second consecutive Justice Brothers Mini Stocks series 35-lap main-event win, passing Richie Altman of Wildomar on the inside of Turn 3 of the 23rd lap. Altman was second and Rod Schmitt of Alta Loma was third.

Brent Scheidemantle of Alta Loma took the lead in the Echo Equipment Legends race on the third lap and kept Oak Hills’ Chad Schug at bay to win the 35-lap main event. Mark Borchetta of Valencia was third.
