NASCAR All Star Saturday Night brings out the fireworks… even at Irwindale!
While the NASCAR Sprint All Star Race at Charlotte featured its share of fireworks, this Saturday nights racing at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale tried to match it with crashes and wild finishes! The Vision Airlines boys were flexing their muscle again with Justin Johnson taking another pole and another win in the second Super Late Model feature.
The Pepsi One Super Late Model Series was scheduled for twin 40 lap mains. In the first feature, 22 year old Ryan Partridge celebrated his birthday a few days earlier by scoring his first Super Late Model victory ever. Partridge started second and battled with fastest qualifier and pole sitter Justin Johnson and Ryan Reed all the way. Partridge bested Johnson and Reed to win the first SLM main event of the night. Partridge took the lead on lap 4 with an inside pass in the second turn. He won by 0.35 over Johnson after all three drivers staged a tight three-way battle from early in – all the way to the finish.
The second of the PEPSI Super Late Model mains featured an Irwindale rivalry between Ryan Reed and Randel King. This time Partridge started first and fast qualifier Johnson second. Johnson, the 24-year old Las Vegan, quickly distanced the field and led all 40 laps in his Vision Airlines Ford Fusion while recording his second feature win in the series. With his second main win, he tied his Vision Airlines teammate, Dusty Davis, 17, with two feature victories for each in the seven features so far this season.
Partridge finished second and was several car lengths in back of Johnson on lap 37 when the yellow flag flew for a crash involving the third and fourth place cars of Ryan Reed and Dusty Davis. They were both battling for position when Reed made contact with the wall and broke his steering, riding the wall into the pit entrance barrier. That brought out the fourth red flag which benefited the Irwindale points leader Justin Johnson. The race finished under caution with Justin Johnson, Ryan Partridge and Randel King on the podium. Johnson’s Vision teammate Davis finished fourth. The Vision team has now claimed four poles and four of the seven features so far.
